Birmingham BBoy takes Break-dancing to the Bolshoi
1 September 2007 // For Immediate Release
Birmingham based choreographer Mickael Riviere (aka Marso) was confirmed today as one of the key collaborators in a groundbreaking new project, bringing together music and dance artists from the UK and Russia.
‘Hectic Dialectic’ will be created over five days before launching Moscow’s acclaimed Rozamira arts festival. Mickael will be working with dancers from the world famous Bolshoi Ballet and break-dance crew ‘Ice Beat’. They’ll be working to combine the talents of some of the best classical dancers and break-dancers in the world to create new movement unlike anything seen before.
Speaking today, Mickael described how he felt about the project:
“It’s really exciting to work with such a great group of dancers from such a range of backgrounds and I’m really looking forward to the challenge of combining the different styles of movement. The Bolshoi Ballet in particular are such a huge name in the dance world that to have the opportunity to create a new piece with their dancers is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Born in France, Mickael has lived and worked in Birmingham for the last five years and has quickly established his BBoys Attic dance group as one of the UK’s foremost education and performance groups. When not teaching young people, Mickael makes award-winning shows for Company Decalage, his professional dance company, which combines contemporary, hip-hop, capoeira and other dance styles.
This exciting and ambitious project is led by MC, performer, director and UK hip hop theatre pioneer Jonzi D. Overseeing the whole project, Jonzi has the unenviable job of pulling all these diverse talents together to create a 40 minute piece of theatre.
Speaking today, Jonzi said:
“It’s great that the Rozamira festival have given us the opportunity to make this piece. It’s so rare that you get the chance to bring so many different artists from so many different cultures together and create something new. I’m looking forward to the challenge of bringing all of these different artistic voices together to create a beautiful exchange of ideas – a truly ‘Hectic Dialectic’.”
In addition to the dance performers, the piece will also feature music from local Russian classical, folk and hip-hop artists as well as the vocal percussion talents of young UK beatboxer, Lianhart.
Jonzi, Mickael and the other artists will be creating the piece in Moscow from 10 September. It will be performed on 14 and 15 September at the Rozamira festival.
